Vaba Lava Tallinn

The Theatre Centre Vaba Lava is housed in a former metal workshop, which was transformed into a simple and elegant steel, glass, and concrete venue by the architects from the architectural firm Allianss Arhitektid OÜ. While redesigning the building, their primary concern was to preserve as much of the historical building as possible to create a symbiosis of old and new. The aesthetics of the building follows the “form follows function” principle. The venue allows a clear and simple use of the space where all areas can be used flexibly.

Vaba Lava subleases premises to the subtenants who are the Estonian Theatre Agency and Independent Modern Dance Agency STÜ.

Location

Vaba Lava is situated in the Telliskivi creative area in the neighbourhood of Kalamaja (a subdistrict of Põhja-Tallinn) and the Baltic Railway Station. Kalamaja is a rapidly developing urban district with a potential of becoming a future cultural centre of Tallinn with a focus on new, avant-garde, and experimental work – a place where is room for taking risks in and across artistic disciplines. Currently, the Telliskivi creative area is already home for several cultural institutions, ateliers, music studios, the International Film Festival PÖFF, and a restaurant which is a popular meeting place for young creative people and intellectuals.
